Where we go wrong

Remember that there are different types of composition, each one with its own characteristics, depending on cohesion and structure. We are going to study the most important ones but before we do this, you should read the summary below about what we do wrong when we write a composition.

WHERE WE GO WRONG

There are three main reasons why student compositions in English are often so bad. Take note.

1. DIRECT TRANSLATION

Students often directly translate their ideas into English; for that reason they write compositions which a native English speaker cannot understand. You must realize that you can't write with the same fluency in a learned language as in your mother tongue. SO WHAT CAN YOU DO, THEN?  Two things:
  • SIMPLIFY YOUR IDEAS
  • ONLY USE STRUCTURES YOU HAVE ALREADY STUDIED

2. MIX UP VERB TENSES

Try to stay always in the same time zone, so as not to confuse other people. Look at this typical mistake:

I went to my friend's house and watch a film (went in the past and watch in the present)

CHECK YOUR WORK after you've written it and you won't make these silly mistakes.

3. COMPLICATED AND ILLOGICAL

You must explain everything simply and clearly to your readers. If you don't, they will feel bored and confused. Make a rough plan so your story progresses clearly

* THINGS WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE OUR COMPOSITION

  •  MAKE A PLAN IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE on another piece of paper. Think about the introduction, the body and the conclusion of your story.

BE CAREFUL! Don't translate any of these ideas.
NEXT: simplify these ideas and find vocabulary and English structures to express your story.
NEXT: divide your story into paragraphs
ELIMINATE ALL COMPLICATED IDEAS

  • USE CONNECTORS OR LINKING WORDS.

One of the best ways to improve your writing style is to use sentence connectors. Sentence connectors are used to express relationships between ideas and to combine sentences. The use of  connectors will improve your writing style
