Melbourne University was established by Hugh Childers by act of the Victorian Parliament that was passed in 1853. classes commenced in 1855 with three professors and sixteen students. original buildings were officially opened by Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Victoria, Sir Charles Hotham, on 3 October 1855. first chancellor, Redmond Barry, who would later be known as Sir Redmond, held the position until day when he died in 1880.
In university's early days, architectural master-plan was developed, establishing intended prevailing building style as gothic revival. Early influential architects included Melbourne's own Joseph Reed, who was responsible for design of many of early campus buildings. Although master-plan was followed until 1930s, 1950s saw the modernist style established as new "house style", resulting in the mix of university buildings seen today.
inauguration of the university was made possible by the wealth resulting from Victoria's gold rush, which took place approximately between 1851 and late 1860s. institution was designed to be "civilising influence" at time of rapid settlement and commercial growth. It was designated secular and excluded from offering degrees in divinity - churches could establish colleges on only the northern perimeter. admission of women in 1881 was further victory for Victorians over more conservative ruling council.
